Scientific Studies Confirm Spa Therapy Helps Relieve Lower Back Pain
In a recent scientific study, which was really a review of a number of other studies, confirmed that soaking in the warm water of a spa “is an ancient way to treat rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders which can relieve the pain and improve the function in musculoskeletal disorders…”
The study notes that how spa therapy works is not clear, but it is likely due to:
- The warm water increases blood circulation which contributes to healing.
- The circulating water on the skin contributes to an analgesic effect.
- Physical exercises that are otherwise painful can be done much easier in the water which also increases blood flow and muscle strength.
- When outdoor air and pleasant scenery are added to the mix, the therapeutic value of the soak is increased.
Simple Water Therapy Suggestions for Lower Back Pain
Any exercise you can do on land will be much easier if you do it in the water. Two therapeutic methods are particularly helpful for relieving lower back pain.
Walking in the water. This has proven to be good for lower back pain. Walk as you would on land, swinging your arms appropriately. Go forward and backward.
Cat stretch. Sit up straight and put your hands on your knees. Then slowly roll your back forward until you feel a stretch. Hold it there for a few seconds, then slowly roll yourself back up.
