The easy answer to the question, “Can you put a spa indoors?” is yes. At Goodall Pools & Spas, we can help you understand the requirements for an indoor spa, including the location, so you can determine if an indoor spa is the right spa for you.
Considerations for Putting a Spa Indoors
The main considerations for installing an indoor spa are:
- Making sure it will fit through the door of the location where you want it installed.
- The structural strength of the floor must be able to accommodate the weight of the spa. A three-person spa weighs approximately 2,500 pounds when filled.
- Spas run on either 110V or 220V. Will the electrical outlets in your spa room accommodate the requirements of your new spa? If you need 220V for your new indoor spa, you will need an electrician to revamp the electrical system for the spa and make sure it is up to code.
- Consider floor coverings that can accommodate the gallon of water that each spa guest typically leaves on the floor when getting out. Water seeps through carpet or artificial turf and is not good for wood floors. Consider putting a drain in the floor of the location of the new spa.
- You will not need to add plumbing to the room, but you will need a nearby water supply. Using a hose is the best way to fill a spa. Is there a hose bib that is easily reached for filling the spa?
- The room should be able to be heated to avoid condensation on the walls while you are using the spa. Cover the walls with water-resistant drywall generally used in bathrooms. Cedar wall covering is a good choice as is concrete or glass.
- A vent fan is recommended to keep the air circulating and to save the structural elements from dry rot. You can choose a fan that is external, window-mounted, or in the ceiling. Be careful with your choice. Some can be noisy so check to see if the fan is quiet enough for you.
An indoor spa may be what some people need to give them the privacy and comfort they desire. It may also be easier to use for those who need hydrotherapy for a medical condition.
