Spas are a wonderful way for the family to spend time relaxing together; and there is nothing quite like a nice warm soak after a long, busy week. As a spa owner, however, it is imperative you follow a few basic safety rules to keep you and your family safe.
Set Smart Spa Soak Times
Limit your dip to 20 minutes tops. Longer soaks, even if the water is not set at a dangerously hot temperature, can cause you to become overheated and dehydrated.
Monitor the Temperature
The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends keeping the water temperature at or below 104 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water temperature in your spa is higher, it can lead to heat stroke, a dizzy spell, fainting, or even unconsciousness, all of which can result in tragedy. Drowning may not be a common occurrence, but it can happen. Be safe and keep your spa’s temperature at 104 F or lower.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water both before and after your time in the spa. Even a 20-minute dip can dehydrate you if you do not drink enough liquid to replenish your body. Be sure not to drink alcohol, which can cause dehydration.
Child Use
Keep the spa cover locked when the spa is not in use to ensure children cannot fall in. When using the spa, children under the age of 16 should have constant adult supervision. It is unwise to allow young children to use your spa. Babies and toddlers can quickly become overheated, which can lead to illness and dehydration. If you are unsure if your child is old enough to use your spa, consult your health care professional.
Weather
As the weather changes, so too should your spa use.
When using your tub in the winter, it is a good idea to set your water temperature at 100 F. If you keep it at the standard 104 F, the difference in temperature when you exit your tub will be too big of a shock to the body. Always keep a warm robe and footwear within arm’s reach so your bare skin receives minimal exposure to the cold.
It is also wise to avoid spa use during a thunderstorm. If lightning were to strike the water while you were in the tub, you could be electrocuted.
Proper Spa Maintenance
A licensed service technician should handle the installation of your spa to ensure proper wiring. Reputable spa dealers will have such professionals on staff, which means they will be familiar with the brand and model you purchased.
Yearly checks by a technician are also a good idea. He or she can make sure your spa remains in good working order.
