There are definite guidelines you should follow for winter maintenance of your swimming pool or spa. At Goodall Pools & Spas, we now discuss how to maintain your swim spa. A swim spa is designed to be used year-round, so this means it also requires year-round maintenance.
Winter Maintenance Tips for Your Swim Spa
Winter maintenance for a swim spa is more like maintenance of your swimming pool.
Do not drain your swim spa. Ideally, you will maintain it in the way you would a swimming pool. Do not drain it, and always keep it running. Keep the water circulating so it runs through the filter several times a day, helps it stay at a warm temperature, and does not run the risk of freezing.
The temperature of the water depends on your personal preference. Most people keep the temperature at about 85 to 90 degrees. It can go as low as about 65 or 70 degrees, but then it will take longer to warm up when you want to use it.
Keep the swim spa covered. If you keep your swim spa covered when it is not in use, the heat will not escape into the air. This tip may save you money on your electric bill and operating costs.
Keep up with the chemicals. You need to keep up with your chemicals, so the water stays clean and clear. You should test the water weekly by using test strips at home, or you can bring samples to us for free water testing. We will let you know what chemicals your swim spa needs to remain clean, clear, and safe for use.
Heating Your Swim Spa for Winter Use
How much time it takes to heat your swim spa for use depends on the temperature at which you routinely keep your swim spa. If you keep your swim spa at 85 to 90 degrees, it will be ready for use as soon as you are. Even if you want to turn it up a little higher on cold days, it will only take a couple of hours to get to your perfect temperature.
If you keep it at 65 to 70 degrees, it will take longer to heat up. You may want to allow a day or two for the water to reach your ideal temperature.
