Myths About Spa Health Risks

Myths on spas

Many people enjoy soaking in a hot tub before or after they exercise. It is known to be a good pain reliever for those who suffer from arthritis or other joint and muscle issues. Some people who cannot get exercise by walking or running on a hard surface are able to exercise in a spa. At Goodall Pool & Spas, we want to encourage the use of hot tubs and are eager to dispel myths you may have about possible risks to your health from their use.

The Water May Get Too Hot and Burn or Scald You

This may be true of ancient hot tubs, but this is no longer a cause for worry. New spas are equipped with temperature regulators that will not heat higher than a maximum temperature of 104 degrees. You may set it at any preferred temperature, like 101 or 102 degrees, but a regulator will cut off the heater at 104.

Spa Health Risks: Hot Tubs Spread Disease

It is true that a poorly maintained spa may harbor bacteria and disease-causing microorganisms. But this can be avoided by proper maintenance of the hot tub. Follow your dealer’s recommendations for adding chemicals and testing the water and there should not be an issue.

There are some contaminants that can enter the water, but if you keep the spa covered when not in use, and ask guests to shower before entering the water, you should not have to worry.

It is Too Easy to Fall when Getting in and Out of the Spa

If water splashes out of the spa onto the ground, you are at the same risk of slipping and falling that you are anytime you walk on a wet surface but getting in and out of the spa should not create a problem. Manufacturers take care to provide slip-proof steps and textured surfaces that help prevent slipping. Use the steps that are provided and install a handrail and you should be able to safely enter and exit the hot tub.

Pregnant Women Should Not Use the Hot Tub

This is not a myth. Pregnant women, particularly women in the first trimester, should not sit for prolonged periods in hot water. Raising the body temperature above 101 degrees is not recommended without first talking to their doctor and following the doctor’s recommendations.
