At Goodall Pools & Spas, we recommend opening a pool as soon as possible in the spring. This is for the health of the pool. The less time that water is sitting and not circulating the less chance you have of an algae bloom as the weather gets warmer.
What is Involved in Opening a Pool?
There are certain actions we take when we are involved in opening a pool:
- Taking the cover off. We fold it and will store it for you if you choose storage as an option.
- Installing the equipment. This includes the handrails, ladders, and any other equipment.
- Starting up the equipment. If the water is at mid-skimmer level, we start up the equipment. We fire up the heater, make sure there are no leaks anywhere, and that everything is filtering properly. We check the overall functioning of the equipment.
- Adding chemicals. We add shock and an algaecide. We also add a strong clarifier called “Pool Opening Complete.” It is specifically designed for opening the pool and works best in cooler water, which is why we use it at the opening. These chemicals can be purchased in any of our stores ahead of time, or directly off the service truck.
How Soon Can the Pool Be Used After Opening?
Technically, you could get in immediately. However, it is best to wait 24 to 48 hours and then bring us a water sample to test first. That way we can determine what you need to balance the water.
Why do you need to wait 24 to 48 hours? When the water sits all winter without circulating, the chemicals settle in the water in different layers. If we take a sample before the water has circulated, the reading will be inaccurate. By waiting a day or two after the water has been circulating, the chemical test of the water will be more accurate.
What If the Pool Is Opened Too Soon?
You may be concerned about opening your pool too soon and the weather dips below freezing. If the pump is on and the water is constantly circulating, the pool water will not freeze.
Is It Expensive to Open a Pool Early?
If you open your pool early, you will generally find that the cost of chemical use and operating your equipment are less in the spring when temperatures are mild. If you wait too long, your pool is likely to get algae, which will cost you a lot more to clean up.
