Now is the time of year to be concerned about leaves falling into your pool. The shade and beauty of the tree leaves you enjoyed during spring and summer have now become a nuisance. At Goodall Pools & Spas, we have some maintenance tips to help you deal with this seasonal problem.
Daily Maintenance
Short of cutting down the trees, a solution that we sincerely hope you have not considered, daily maintenance may be the most economical method for keeping leaves out of your pool. However, not everyone has the time or discipline it takes to make this their main method of keeping leaves out of their pool. If you plan on doing this yourself, you must do the following:
- Empty the skimmer at least once a day and, in heavily treed areas, this may need to be done two or three times a day. Be very careful when emptying the skimmer basket. Creatures sometimes find solace in the leaves that are in the basket, so you should use a skimmer with a handle. That way, you can dump out the basket without having to reach into it and risk being confronted with something unknown. There are clog-proof skimmer baskets that continue to work well even when they become full of leaves.
- Skim off the leaves that remain on top of the pool and are not trapped by the skimmer.
- Remove the leaves from the automatic cleaner (if you have one).
Leaf Nets
Leaf nets work like mesh covers and catch the leaves as they fall into the pool. The nets must be removed periodically so the leaves can be removed. The net resembles a fishing net.
Safety Fences
The main purpose of a safety fence is to protect children from entering the pool unsupervised. A safety fence also keeps stray pets and other animals out of the pool area. They have another function which is keeping out leaves that are blowing around the area.
