Spas versus a swim spa: how are they different and what are the benefits of owning either one?
A Breakdown of Hot Tubs vs. Swim Spas
A regular spa (sometimes called a hot tub) is a completely self-contained body of water that people use to relax in, recover from sore muscles and other aches and pains, or simply reconnect with their family and friends. It contains about 300 to 500 gallons of water. A swim spa is a much larger, multipurpose body of water, that typically holds between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons of water.
One end of the swim spa is equipped with jets that create a current that allows you to “swim in place,” and get the exercise you need as if you were swimming laps in a regular pool. The current can also provide resistance training. This allows you to walk, jog, or run against the current, while protecting your joints and feet because you are buoyant in the water. We even have illustrated cross-training videos and waterproof fitness equipment, which allow you to use the swim current as a resistance trainer, to develop muscle and burn fat.
Swim Spa Features and Accessories
Some of our swim spas have touch pads, similar to a treadmill, so you can control the speed of the current you are swimming against. You can track your results and your cardiovascular output. You can even track calories burned.
Your swim spa provides you with a year-round swimming/fitness center that is always open and ready to use, even in cold weather.
At the other end of the swim spa, there are hydrotherapy seats that provide a body massage, so you can use it like a regular spa/hot tub. You can recover from that workout by taking advantage of the massage jets. It’s like having your own personal masseuse ready to help you recover.
A swim spa gives people the best of both worlds. All of the advantages of a hot tub, plus an underwater gym!
Take a Test Swim at Goodall Pools & Spas
At Goodall Pools, we would encourage you to try out a swim spa before purchasing one. We have a 14-foot Hydropool Aqua Trainer swim spa at our Lebanon store, and we also have a 16-foot Hydropool Executive Trainer at our Harrisburg store.
Our sales team is always happy to spend some time with people who are interested and to demonstrate the swim spa. So, stop by and bring your bathing suit and a couple of towels and take it for a “test” swim. It’s a great opportunity to learn exactly how well a swim spa performs and how easy it is to own.
