Contrary to what seems to be popular belief, not all dogs can swim. Every year, 5,000 pets that cannot swim drown in backyard swimming pools. Even dogs that can swim may find it impossible to climb out the side of the pool and exhaust themselves trying. At Goodall Pools & Spas, we want to be sure your summer fun in your pool does not result in any harm to your dog.
Be Sure Your Dog Can Swim
Dogs with short legs like Dachshunds, or those with big heads like Boxers, are unable to naturally swim. Other breeds, like Labradors and Golden Retrievers, are natural swimmers. But, there are exceptions to all rules. You may find your Boxer is a great swimmer or your Golden Retriever shies away from the water.
Some important tips to keep dogs in the pool safe include:
· Do not leave dogs unattended in the backyard.
· Teach your dog how to get out of the pool.
· If your dog cannot swim, but likes to get in the pool, put a life vest on it.
· Keep enticing floaters out of the pool. Dogs that cannot swim may jump into the pool to chase the attractive toy.
You may find some dogs in the pool who should be comfortable there fighting to get out. The dog may have had a traumatic experience around water that you do not know about and it may never be comfortable in the water.
Rinse Your Dog After Swimming
Your dog’s skin may be just as sensitive to pool chemicals as you are. Be sure to rinse your dog with regular tap water after it gets out of the pool. This should get rid of any chemical that may get caught up in the dog’s hair, or that may stay on the dog’s skin. This will reduce or prevent skin irritation.
General Safety Tips
General backyard pool safety tips to keep your dog safe include:
· Keep a dog water dish readily available. If there is no water dish, your dog may try to drink out of the pool. This may cause the dog to lose its balance, fall into the pool, and not be able to get out.
· Make sure stored chemicals are kept away from the dog’s reach and with the lids to the chemicals kept tightly closed.
