The Most Magnificent Way to Extend Your Swim Season https://goodallpools.com/the-most-magnificent-way-to-extend-your-swim-season/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/?p=6080 What if you could extend your swim season deep into autumn and even start it a little earlier?

Some say the seasons are the best thing about living in the Northeast. Others say the seasons are the worst thing about living in the Northeast.

We love the seasons! But when autumn comes calling and it gets to be closing time for the swimming pool, well, we at Goodall Pools & Spas can understand both sides.

We offer two fantastic pool heating options: gas pool heaters and heat pumps. Let’s dive into the details and find the perfect solution for your pool!

Gas Pool Heaters: Quick Heating but Not Energy Efficient

Our gas pool heaters, such as the Pentair MasterTemp® and Hayward® Universal H-Series, are known for their ability to heat water quickly using gas or propane. They are perfect for those moments when you want to raise the water temperature for a specific event or during a few weeks in spring and fall.

However, gas pool heaters are not the most energy-efficient way to extend your swim season, leading many customers to turn them off when not in use due to higher operating costs.

Heat Pumps: The Energy-Efficient Choice to Extend Your Swim Season

Heat pumps, like the Pentair UltraTemp® and Hayward® HeatPro®, use electricity to operate, making them a more economical choice to extend your swim season.

Though they may have a slightly higher upfront cost, they offer significant energy savings and efficiency. Some electric companies and manufacturers even provide rebates for choosing heat pumps over traditional heaters.

The only downside to heat pumps is that they take longer to heat the water, gradually raising the temperature over a few days. However, once the desired temperature is reached, the heat pump helps maintain it throughout the summer, similar to how a home heat pump operates.

Personal Preference and Available Resources

Choosing between heat pumps and heaters to extend your swim season depends on your personal preferences and available resources. If you only want to heat your water during a couple of key points during the year, like for a party, or a weekend in early spring, and you have access to gas or propane, gas pool heaters may suit your needs.

On the other hand, if you value long-term energy efficiency and cost savings, heat pumps are the way to go. They provide gradual heating, resulting in a more environmentally friendly approach while maintaining your pool temperature throughout the season.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we take pride in offering a wide range of pool heating options to cater to your needs. Whether you prefer the quick heating of gas pool heaters or the energy-efficient performance of heat pumps, rest assured that your swimming experience will always be enjoyable.

The Ultimate Swim Season Experience

Imagine the delight of lounging in your pool, sipping on a refreshing drink, as the autumn leaves gently fall around you. Thanks to the incredible pool heating options offered by Goodall Pools & Spas, you can extend your swim season and make this daydream your reality

With gas pool heaters and heat pumps at your disposal, you have the power to transform your swim season into an unforgettable experience. Embrace the changing seasons and extend your swim season with a warm, inviting pool that beckons you to dive in no matter the weather.

Extend your poolside gatherings, host unforgettable pool parties, and create cherished memories with your loved ones, all year round. The magic of an extended swim season awaits you, and with our expert guidance, you’ll find the perfect heating solution to suit your needs.

So, dive into the joy of an endless swim season, courtesy of Goodall Pools & Spas — your partner in making every moment in the pool count! We have been in business for over 60 years and are proud to offer five store locations in Pennsylvania. Our team of experienced professionals is committed to providing our customers with the highest quality products and services available on the market today.

What Are the Different Kinds of Pool Covers to Choose From? https://goodallpools.com/what-are-the-different-kinds-of-pool-covers-to-choose-from/ Mon, 17 Jul 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/?p=5716 Owning a swimming pool brings an ode of joy to your backyard, so of course you want to protect it. One of the easiest and most effective ways to do this is by using a pool cover. Pool covers not only keep your pool clean, but they also help to maintain the temperature and reduce evaporation. However, with so many different kinds of covers available, it can be difficult to know which one to choose. At Goodall, we want to customize your pool ownership experience and cater to what works best for you and your family. Let’s talk about the different kinds of pool covers available and the amazing benefits they offer. We’ll sort them by winter covers and in-season covers.

Winter Covers

Keep Wear and Tear at Bay with a Winter Pool Cover

As the name suggests, winter pool covers are designed for use during the winter months when your pool is not in use. These covers are made from heavy-duty material, such as polyethylene or PVC, and are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. They are also designed to prevent leaves, dirt, and debris from entering the pool, keeping it clean and well-maintained.

Safety Is Always First with Safety Pool Covers

Safety pool covers are designed to prevent accidents from occurring. These winter covers are made from heavy-duty materials and are designed to be strong enough to support the weight of a person or pet and come in a variety of options like solid vinyl or mesh.

Mesh safety covers are designed to keep debris and most sunlight out of your pool while allowing water to pass through. These options are made from a woven material that allows rainwater and snow to pass through while keeping leaves, dirt, and debris out of your swimming area.

In-Season Covers

Solar Covers: An Energy-Efficient Way to Warm Your Pool

A solar pool cover is designed to heat your pool using the power of the sun. These covers are made from a thin layer of plastic or vinyl and are designed to float on top of the water. They work by trapping the sun’s heat and transferring it to the water, which helps to increase the water temperature. Solar covers are an excellent choice for those who want to extend their swimming season and save money on heating costs.

Automatic Pool Covers: Easy and Effective

Automatic covers are designed to make covering and uncovering your pool easy. These covers are made from a durable material, such as vinyl, and are designed to be motorized. They are operated using a remote control and can be opened or closed with the touch of a button. You can open or close your pool with the touch of a button. There are many different kinds of pool covers available. And, each works to make your pool ownership experience easier than ever.

If you’re ready to start planning your pool build, Goodall Pools & Spas is ready to make your backyard dream come true. Contact us today to get started!

What to Look for in a Luxury Swimming Pool Builder https://goodallpools.com/what-to-look-for-in-a-luxury-swimming-pool-builder/ Mon, 26 Jun 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/?p=5712 What is the first step on the journey of owning the luxury swimming pool of your dreams? Finding a luxury swimming pool builder. But with so many swimming pool builders to choose from, it can be challenging to know what to look for.

Recognizing a Luxury Swimming Pool Builder

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we’ve spent more than 60 years mastering the art and science of pool building. From design to project management to your ongoing enjoyment of your backyard oasis, we know what is expected of us to deliver the gold standard in pools.

Here, we will explore some of the key factors that we prioritize as a Top 50 Pool Builder. Keep these in mind when researching a luxury swimming pool builder, and you will fast-track yourself to success.

Experience and Reputation

A reputable builder should have a track record of successful projects and be knowledgeable in all aspects of pool construction. Does that mean every pool builder needs to be in the business for 60 years to be reputable? No. It does mean, however, that they can reference successful projects, satisfied customers, and, eventually, credits and/or awards within the industry.

Therefore, hunt for testimonials and reviews. Keep an eye out for mentions of the pool builder in trade periodicals and websites. And ask to see examples of past projects. Remember that not all clients want the same thing. So as you browse past projects, ask questions about how the design coincided with the owner’s goals. If the pool builder can speak eloquently about the design elements and how well it met the customer’s needs, that’s a sign of a quality pool builder.

Customer Service

Good customer service is essential when choosing any pool builder. Staff should be easy to communicate with and be responsive to your needs and concerns throughout the project. They should also be willing to provide you with regular updates on the progress of the project and be available to answer any questions you may have.

Customization

Customization is a quintessential characteristic of a luxury swimming pool. Therefore, a luxury swimming pool builder should be able to create a design that meets your specific needs. Here are some elements to keep in mind when considering customization:

Pool Type. Goodall designs pool environments consisting of vinyl-liner pools, fiberglass pools, and Biodesign Beach Pools. Vinyl-liner pools and Biodesign Beach Pools offer the most customizability in terms of size, shape, and additional features. Fiberglass pools consist of a pre-fabricated pool shell and are, thus, fixed in size and shape. However, the pool surround is customizable.

Design Scope. No matter how much of the pool environment will be built from scratch, a luxury swimming pool builder should be able to offer a wide range of design options, from traditional to modern.

Special Features. They should also be able to suggest features that can enhance the performance and enjoyment of your pool, such as heating systems, automation, and filtration systems. They should also be able to suggest design features that can elevate the look and feel of the pool such as cascades, deck jets, or LED lighting.

Financing Options

Building a luxury pool is a significant investment. As such, it’s essential to consider your financing options. A reputable luxury swimming pool builder should be able to offer financing options that suit your budget and needs. They should be able to work with you to determine the best financing option, such as a home equity loan or pool loan.

Luxury Swimming Pool Builder in Central Pennsylvania

Selecting the right luxury swimming pool builder is crucial to ensure that your pool is constructed to the highest standards and meets your specific needs. By taking the time to research and select the right builder, you can enjoy your luxury swimming pool for years to come.

When you’re ready to launch the design of your luxury swimming pool, contact us at Goodall Pools & Spas. We’ll connect you to our design team so you can see that dream pool in your backyard asap. Don’t have a dream pool in your mind yet? Visit our Gallery for some inspiration.

An Above Ground Pool: The Win-Win for Families with Small Children https://goodallpools.com/above-ground-pool-families/ Mon, 27 Mar 2023 16:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-above-ground-pool-families/ For many families, having a swimming pool in the backyard would be a dream come true — not just for the little ones, but for Mom and Dad as well. But for families with small children, a pool can seem like a safety concern. To those families, we ask, “How much have you thought about getting an above ground pool?”

Aha! An above ground pool lets you enjoy the fun of having a pool while protecting the safety of your little ones. So if you want to put swim parties on the calendar this summer but worry less about small children falling in, we at Goodall Pools & Spas have some insight to share with you here.

Not Your Old-School Above Ground Pool

So often when people fantasize about pools, they gravitate toward inground pools and leave above ground pools in the filing cabinet marked “Things That Are Outdated.” At Goodall, we have a very different outlook on above ground pools.

Nowadays, an above ground pool can score just as high in stylishness and strength as it can in risk management. Additionally, it does rather well in the functionality and maintenance departments. Here are some of the reasons why we think above ground pools are a great fit for families with small children.

1. Safety First

One of the most significant benefits of an above ground pool is that it offers increased safety. Above ground pools are elevated off the ground, making it more difficult for small children to accidentally fall in. Additionally, many above ground pools come with safety features such as non-slip surfaces and ladders with safety barriers, providing even more peace of mind for parents.

2. Easy to Install

Another great advantage of above ground pools is that they’re relatively quick and easy to install. An above ground pool can be installed in a matter of days. This makes them an ideal option for families who want to enjoy a pool in their backyard without having to wait through a custom-build process.

Furthermore, above ground pools are also comparatively less expensive to install. This makes them an economical option for families who want to have a pool but want to remain agile with their budget.

3. Simple Maintenance

Above ground pools are also much easier to maintain. For example, they typically require less cleaning and upkeep because they elevate the water surface off of the ground. That means fewer bugs crawling in and less dirt being windblown into the water.

Furthermore, above ground pools are typically smaller than inground pools. Smaller size means less water and, thus, less time and effort needed for maintenance.

4. Above Ground Pool Versatility

Above ground pools are also highly versatile and have customizable elements to suit your family’s needs. For example, you can choose from a range of above ground pool shapes such as round, oval, or rectangle. Also, you can choose from a variety of patterns for your liner. This versatility allows you to create a pool that fits seamlessly into your backyard.

5. Fun for the Whole Family

Of course, the primary benefit of having a pool in your backyard is that it provides a fun and engaging activity for the whole family. Whether you’re looking to cool off on a hot summer day or exercise and improve your swimming skills, an above ground pool is a great option.

Also, because above ground pools are relatively easy to install and maintain, you’ll have more time and energy to spend actually enjoying the pool.

An Above Ground Pool for Every Generation

Just as Goodall Pools & Spas has spent generations creating sparkling water and lifelong memories for our customers, we want every generation of your family to enjoy a thriving lifestyle together in your backyard. So contact us or visit one of our five locations today. We’ll acquaint you with our selection of Radiant® above ground pool kits so you and your kids can enjoy the water safely.

Is a Swim Spa Right for Me? https://goodallpools.com/is-a-swim-spa-right-for-me/ Mon, 13 Mar 2023 16:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-is-a-swim-spa-right-for-me/ The swim spa has become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to stay in shape, relax, and unwind at home. They offer a convenient and versatile way to enjoy the benefits of swimming, exercise, and hydrotherapy in a smaller, more manageable package than a traditional pool. But with so many options available on the market, it can be difficult to know if a swim spa is the right choice for you.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we’ve seen how our customers benefit from swim spas physically and mentally. Here, we explore some of the key factors to consider when deciding if a swim spa is right for you.

Swim Spa Benefits

A swim spa is a great investment for anyone looking to stay in shape, ease stress, and enjoy the best of both a pool and a hot tub in a more convenient package. Below are just a few of the benefits of swim spas.

1. Low-Impact Exercise

One of the major benefits of swim spas is that they provide an excellent workout for your entire body. The resistance of the water provides a low-impact form of exercise that is easy on your joints. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced swimmer, swim spas allow you to adjust the current to your desired level, making it an ideal workout for people of all fitness levels.

Since the water helps support the body while also providing resistance, swim spas are a great option for people with mobility issues and or trouble with traditional exercises.

2. Targeted Hydrotherapy

Another major benefit of swim spas is that they provide a convenient, relaxing way to unwind after a long day. The jetted massage system helps relieve stress and tension in your muscles. The built-in seating allows you to sit back and soak in the warm water, providing a therapeutic experience that helps you relax after a day at work or an intense workout.

3. Useable Year-Round

Unlike a traditional pool, a swim spa can be used all year round as it is equipped with a heating system that keeps the water at a comfortable temperature, allowing you to enjoy your swim spa even on cold winter days. This means you can exercise and unwind all year round, regardless of the season.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Swim Spa

When you’re browsing swim spas, there are a few key factors to consider. One of the most important things to think about is your main purpose for the swim spa. Will you use it primarily for exercise? For relaxation? For entertaining? The answer to this question will guide your choice of size and placement.

Another important factor to consider is the jet configurations that different swim spas come with. Different jet systems offer different levels of resistance and massage, so it’s important to find one that meets your needs. The swim spas we carry at Goodall include multiple jet systems that enable both high-energy workouts and soothing hydromassage for relaxation and stress relief.

The Swim Spa That Is Right for Me

In conclusion, swim spas are a great investment if you…

  • Want to improve your physical and mental well-being.
  • Enjoy the best of a pool and hot tub in one convenient package.
  • Want to swim year-round (even during Pennsylvania winters).
  • Entertain friends and family in the comfort of your home.

Need help deciding which swim spa model is right for you? Contact us at Goodall Pools & Spas or visit one of our five locations today. We’ll not only introduce you to our selection of swim spas but also to our Prestige Spa and Swim Spa Maintenance program and a wide range of products to meet your spa care needs.

Why Are Hot Tubs So Popular? https://goodallpools.com/why-are-hot-tubs-so-popular/ Mon, 26 Dec 2022 17:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-why-are-hot-tubs-so-popular/ Since the pandemic, you may have heard several neighbors talk about their new hot tubs. Perhaps you’ve even bought one yourself. So why are hot tubs so popular nowadays?

There are several reasons why hot tubs have become so popular in recent years. One of the main reasons is that they provide a unique environment for relaxation and rejuvenation. And when public health conditions made it harder for people to find recreation outside the home, spas quickly became a creative solution.

Furthermore, hot tubs possess some distinct advantages in terms of use and maintenance. Below, we delve into a few of the main reasons hot tubs have become so popular.

Health Benefits

Soaking in hot tubs has long been associated with good health. The warm water increases blood flow which, in turn, promotes healing. The buoyancy reduces your body’s pressure on your joints while the hot tub jets apply targeted hydrotherapy to relieve muscle pain.

Additionally, the heat boosts your metabolism, which can help you burn calories and lose weight. The hot tub environment also encourages the production of serotonin and dopamine (i.e., the “feel good” chemicals) in the brain, which can reduce stress, improve your mood, and help you sleep better.

So whether you want to recover from a long day at work or an intense workout, a hot tub is an excellent way to treat your body and mind.

Cost Effectiveness

Hot tubs also prove to be quite cost effective. The purchase and installation of a high-end hot tub or swim spa can carry a similar price tag to that of some pools. However, spas typically carry fewer maintenance costs in the long run. Pools, for example, require more chemicals to keep the water clean and balanced, while spas only need a fraction of the chemicals.

Additionally, spas, with their warm water, can be used all year round. So, while certain spa models are comparable in price to some pools, the return on investment is incredible for the buyer.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective way to enjoy your backyard all year long, a hot tub is a great way to go!

Energy Efficiency

Hot tubs are known for being energy efficient. This is due in part to the fact that manufacturers are required to meet industry energy-efficiency standards.

On average, spas use less electricity to operate than pools. They also require less water than pools, which further contributes to their energy efficiency. In short, spas are a great choice for those looking to save on their monthly utility bills.

Special Features

Many hot tub models include special features that enhance the sensory experience for the user. Popular features include multi-colored LED lighting elements, sound systems with wireless connectivity, and aromatherapy components. These features can add to the relaxation and enjoyment of using a hot tub — making the investment well worth it.

Another fantastic benefit of hot tubs is that many models offer the opportunity for customization. This includes a variety of different spa shell looks and spa cabinet colors. Some manufacturers even offer adjustable jets, so you can tailor your hot tub experience to your specific needs and preferences. This level of customization means that you can truly make your hot tub your own personal oasis.

Popular Hot Tubs in Pennsylvania

Goodall Pools & Spas is Central Pennsylvania’s leading resource for hot tubs and swim spas. If you’re ready to create your own private oasis with a hot tub, contact us or visit one of our five locations today. We offer the best spa models in the industry as well as spa service programs, chemicals, and maintenance equipment.

Can You Actually Swim in a Swim Spa? https://goodallpools.com/can-you-actually-swim-in-a-swim-spa/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 17:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-can-you-actually-swim-in-a-swim-spa/ It’s a question that has been asked for years: “Can you actually swim in a swim spa?” The answer is yes! Swim spas are designed for swimming, and most come with powerful jets that will provide an amazing massage. In fact, they’re referred to as “swim spas” because of their ability to let you enjoy a legitimate swim experience in a spa-like environment. So if you’re looking for a great way to get exercise, relax, or relieve stress, a swim spa is the perfect option.

What are swim spas and what do they offer?

Swim spas offer many features and benefits that make them a great investment for your home. Not only do they offer the same relaxing hydromassage features as a hot tub, but they also provide an excellent form of exercise.

They are also equipped with swim jets that pump a steady current of water with adjustable speeds through the tub. This lets you swim “laps” just as if you were in a traditional pool, except you are swimming against a current in a single spot.

Because swim spas are smaller than a pool, they cost much less to heat and maintain. They also take up less space, so they are perfect for smaller yards or patios.

How are swim spas different from traditional hot tubs or spas?

Swim spas are larger than most hot tubs or spas, so you have room to both swim and soak. Many models include both a swimming tub and a separate hot tub for relaxation purposes.

What are the benefits of owning a swim spa?

One of the best things about swim spas is that it lets you exercise and relax in one convenient amenity. Unlike a traditional pool, it lets you swim against a current within a confined space. This gives you a superb option for a low-impact workout. That should come as great news to people wanting to stay in shape without too much strain on their joints and muscles! Whether your goals are to train your butterfly stroke, stretch your hamstrings, or build muscle tone with the help of pool weights, your swim spa is on your side.

When the workout is over, switch to relaxation mode in your spa by sitting among the soothing hot tub jets.

Use your swim spa’s size to your advantage. Invite friends and relatives over for the biggest, best hot tub party in the neighborhood – even during the winter!

How much do these amazing things cost, and how can you afford one?

Another great benefit of swim spas is that they are relatively affordable. The initial investment may be higher than that of a traditional hot tub, but swim spas offer much more in terms of functionality and health benefits.

Also, if you’re thinking about buying a pool in the future, don’t make a purchase before looking into swim spas. Certain high-end models may be comparable in price to a pool. However, swim spas are usable year-round, unlike pools which are usable only in warmer months. Therefore, if you invest in a swim spa as opposed to a traditional pool, you’ll get more bang for your buck.

Where to buy a swim spa in Pennsylvania.

If you’re looking for a fun, efficient way to get low-impact exercise, relax, and relieve stress, a swim spa is a game changer. Can Everyone Use a Hot Tub? https://goodallpools.com/can-everyone-use-a-hot-tub/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 17:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-can-everyone-use-a-hot-tub/ You’ve spent enough time fantasizing about a hot tub in your house. But before you finally make the purchasing journey, you have to ask an important question. “Can everyone use a hot tub?”

If that dream spa comes home with you, you want everyone in your household to enjoy it, right? This is where we at Goodall Pools & Spas have good news for you. By engaging in a few best practices, you and so many others in your life can enjoy a hot tub.

“Can everyone use a hot tub?” A healthy approach.

When it comes to hot tubbing, it’s often more helpful to ask, “When is it best for someone to use a hot tub?” The truth is, everyone in your household may be able to use a hot tub, just not all the time. Like all wellness practices, there are certain circumstances under which extra caution may be in order. Some circumstances are temporary. Others are not. The key is to be honest about where each individual is on the journey.

As a general rule, you should consult your healthcare provider before beginning a spa practice. This will help you confirm that you’re not in danger of any adverse effects from the high heat.

Once you have the green light from your doctor, begin your hot tubbing journey with baby steps. For the sake of the tub, don’t let the water temperature drop below 75 degrees Fahrenheit. We suggest trying a temperature in the low to mid-80-degree range to start and adjust it by a few degrees to suit your comfort level.

In the beginning, keep your soaks between 15-20 minutes. As your comfort level increases, you can adjust the temperature and/or duration of your soak. However, the water temperature should never exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit which is the maximum temperature recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Also, know that as the temperature increases, you’ll have to reduce the soaking time accordingly to prevent dizzinesses, nausea, and overheating.

Who can use a hot tub?

Hot tubbing is a great fit for swimmers looking for more:

  • Pain relief
  • Stress reduction
  • Quality time

Pain relief

The hydrotherapy provided by a hot tub has well-documented health benefits. Chief among them is reduced pain in muscles and joints. The warm water pulls double duty in reducing the gravitational pull on your bones and increasing your blood flow. This promotes the healing effects in areas of your body where you feel pain.

Stress reduction

Not only does hot tubbing take the edge off your physical pain, but it eases your mental noise as well. When you find yourself in the comforting environment of a spa, your brain releases serotonin and dopamine (i.e., the “feel good” chemicals). This starts a chain reaction in your body that translates to reduced stress and improved sleep.

Quality time

Hot tubs serve their highest purpose when they’re enjoyed by friends and family together. It’s a rare opportunity for people to put digital distractions aside and hit their physical and mental “Reset” buttons in the company of people they love.

Can kids use a hot tub?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children under the age of 5 should not use a hot tub because of their greater risk of overheating. Children over 5 can use a hot tub provided they can safely stand on the tub’s bottom with their heads completely above the water. When children use the tub, have them sit in a seat where they aren’t totally submerged, and lower the temperature from your typical setting. To put this into perspective, a child in 104-degree water shouldn’t soak for longer than 5 minutes.

Can pregnant women use a hot tub?

Research on spa use during pregnancy is limited. However, there is evidence to suggest that the elevated temperatures can cause complications, especially early in the term. Since everybody is different, pregnant women should consult their doctor to determine if a limited soak is a fit for them.

Can people with medical conditions use a hot tub?

Again, no two bodies are the same. A spa soak may be a good intervention for one type and pose challenges for another, depending on the condition. Therefore, people with underlying medical conditions should, as always, ask their doctor if hot tubbing, at least in moderation, is suitable for them.

Where can I find a hot tub for my family?

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we carry multiple user-friendly hot tub brands. Our staff always welcomes questions you may have, including “Can everyone use a hot tub.” Contact us or visit one of our 5 central Pennsylvania locations today.

Isn’t that something you think of in conjunction with a pool closing? Yes, indeed. However, you should know that your pool cover is just as critical to a successful pool opening as a closing.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we’ve spent nearly 60 years servicing pools (many of which we’ve built ourselves). In that time, we’ve seen many customers breathe a sigh of relief when they reopen their pool in the spring. Others screech at the sight. Our advice is this: if you want to fall into the first category, invest in a good pool cover.

Why is a pool cover so important now for next year’s season?

You’ve cleaned your pool for the last time this year. The water level has been adjusted properly. And the winterization chemicals are in their place keeping the organic matter at bay. Now, it’s time for the finishing touch: fastening a reliable safety cover over your favorite swimming hole.

“Why is this step so important?” you may ask. “Why not just drain the pool and give it a solid scrub down once spring rolls around? That eliminates the need to spend money on a safety cover.” First and foremost, don’t drain the pool.

The purpose of keeping a certain level of water in the pool during the colder months is to keep the pool walls in contact with the winterization chemicals that have dissolved in the water. Without taking this step, your pool structure becomes the best hangout spot in town for bacteria and other organic matter that leads to stubborn algae. In short, you end up with a runaway swamp that compromises the pool’s integrity and shortens its lifespan.

It’s decided, then. The water stays in the pool! But winterization chemicals alone aren’t enough to keep algae from rearing its head eventually. That’s where the pool cover comes in. A sturdy, expansive cover blocks debris like dirt, plant matter, and the heaviest of hitters, snow, from entering the pool. As a result, your winterized pool water can continue doing its job uninterrupted, and you’ll breathe that satisfying sigh of relief when winter thaws.

What type of pool cover is best for winter use?

If you ask a Goodall team member about how to cover your pool in winter, you’re likely to hear the words “safety cover.” More specifically, we set our customers up with customized safety covers from Merlin Industries, cut specifically to match the shape of their pools.

These safety covers are made from either solid vinyl or mesh. As such, they’re engineered to hold up under a heavy load. In fact, they’re called safety covers because they help prevent people and pets from falling into the pool when it’s not being used.

This composition is what makes safety covers great protection against debris and snow accumulation in the wintertime. Whereas a typical winter cover (which is a tarp-like cover) may sag under the weight of melting snow, Merlin’s covers do well at limiting any puddling you may encounter when removal time comes. Additionally, safety covers are anchored into the concrete, whereas traditional winter covers are only held on with the weight of water bags.

So put the final seal on your pool with a safety cover before winter. Your pool will return the favor with cleaner water and, thus, less effort on your part when reopening time arrives.
